Sewing

Betsy Jo, Alma Chand and Jane Kinzinger began their first day of sewing classes on a basketball court, under a tent, near the community center being built next door by the other members of the task force. Eight women from the Habitat village Cantil-E arrived and were eager to see what we had planned. First down the steep hill to our "class" came three Treadle Sengei sewing machines and our Kenmore portable electric sewing machine. Betsy brought a surger and this was a new sewing machine for everyone.

The fabric we sent several months ago arrived in 3 days ago! Since the fabric had not yet been delivered to the site, however, we began with a discussion of a business plan for their cooperative venture. The women decided to name their venture "JBA Enterprises" after Jane, Betsy and Alma(!).

When the big box or fabric arrived, the women began choosing pieces to sew pillow cases, bed covers and curtains. They finished off edge with the new surger and pedaled the Singers. They sang and chatted. The women involved were Carmelita, Fely, Marissa, Emelina, Beatrice, Amy, Remy and Lenny. We were thankful for their energy and creativity.

We have other sewing projects planned for the rest of the week. - Jane Kinzinger
