Animal

Before I forget I wanted to share a somewhat disturbing story. We had just landed in Manila and were standing around waiting for the airport shuttle bus to take us over to the other terminal We ended up waiting for over an hour because of all the people and luggage. While we were waiting we ate fresh peanuts Hank had brought from Michigan. The shells went all over the pavement, although John did his best to keep them in his pocket. Sure enough, not five minutes had past and a small man hunched low to the ground with a hand broom came by to sweep up all the shells and other trash. We felt a little sheepish, and John decided to tip the man. We asked a Filipino, who was a guide for another group, what would be an appropriate tip. His response? "That animal doesn't deserve a tip."

I haven't seen any more indication of race or class prejudice. The people here are amazingly gracious and friendly. Still, every society has its shadow side.
